How can there be such a radical disconnect between our elected representatives and those they purport to represent?
A recent poll by the Pew Research Center found that Americans support background checks (81%), an assault-weapons ban (63%), and a ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines (64%). A majority also oppose carrying concealed weapons without a permit, which is legally allowed in Kentucky.
The answer: It’s because of the failure of our “winner take all” political system.
The problem isn’t the parties or the candidates. The problem is our election system. #PluralityVoting rewards extreme polarization and conflict and gives over-sized power to voters with extreme views. What the American people want is irrelevant.
We can fix this!
One simple change to the way we vote – #RankedChoiceVoting – can improve our election process and bring Kentuckians back together! Because candidates need to appeal to a majority of voters and earn 2nd and 3rd place votes, they can campaign and legislate on the issues that unite all of us.
